I work from home. Motivation is ALWAYS something that lurks behind my chair, trying to get me to go and do anything other than that thing that is due at the end of the day.
How do I ever get shit done, you ask? Well, it happens better on some days than others but it’s part of the work from home package, as I like to call it.
If you can’t self-motivate (AND self-motivate to do things correctly, thoroughly and with attention to detail) then you should not work from home.
Work From Home + the Scary Hour
What is the Scary Hour? First off, this is NOT NEW TikTok.
It’s been around forever under the name ‘power hour’ and ‘eat the frog’ (NO clue where that came from). My point is, this is not a new ‘hack’ but a way that us work from home folks have been chugging along since the beginning of computer time.
My personal approach to the power hour is working for 50 minutes of each hour and taking a 10 minute break. This is especially effective in the spring and summer when I can go outside and touch some plants, dirt and all the things that I love the most.
Also known as the Pomodoro Technique, the idea is sorta like the donkey with a carrot on a string. Work for a bit then take a break. PLUS it is really good for your posture, your potential carpal tunnel syndrome, etc. Your back and arms will thank you.
Best Time For YOUR Power Hour, Scary Frog Time?
That is entirely up to you.
The current ‘hack-sters’ (people using this so-called HACK) seem to be fond of the first thing in the morning approach.
I think you have to do whatever works for YOU and your workflow. We’re all different and so what works for me may not work for you. It’s all about finding your own personal rhythm and going for it.
